The Turnpike, 520-522 Wilmslow Rd, Manchester

This is a great pub to have good conversation and drink cheap, reasonable quality Sammy Smith's beer. It does feel like something out of the 1970s, and the average age of the clientèle is well over 50, but you can always get a seat, you can always hear yourself think, you never have to shout, you can chat to the landlady, and it's incredibly satisfying being able to get nicely sozzled for well under a tenner.

The landlord and landlady are excellent, despite my frequent intransigence.

Like stepping back into Manchester-past: Wonderfully priced pub. Good people.
