Really great pub with excellent food - 5 star - April 2012 - We have been to this pub several times, which is nothing unusual, except that it usually takes us a couple of hours to get there- but it is worth it. It really is a proper friendly, warm, welcoming pub and restaurant, which serves great tasty well cooked food, and whose owners and staff make one's custom feel truely valued. If you are anywhere near Scotch Corner, or indeed anywere North of Watford on the A1, it is defineltly worth a visit. It is also very dog friendly, and as with all good pubs has separate areas for those who are not dog lovers, or who want a quite meal. Excellent value for real homecooked food.

Helpful with dietary requirements, great food, attentive service and landlord seemed genuinely interested in our overall experience. Will definately call again and would recommend.

Whilst the previous reviewer was unhappy with the service, I find the comment about this pub ' trying too hard to be something it is not' to be very harsh. The Shoulder of Mutton has undergone a huge transformation in the short time that the new owners have been in residence and this hasn't involved ripping the heart and soul out of this country pub as so often is the case. Fran & Kevin are excellent hosts, the food is divine and the whole experience is superb value for money.

I had their warm salad and the eponymous Shoulder of Mutton, which was fab - washed down with nice pint of cask (Boondoogle) ale. Pleasant service and I'll be back for sure - particularly as the Hotel I was staying in had a kitchen meltdown with people still not served after a 1.5hour wait!
