One of the few remaining local pubs in the area and really like the calm vibe, service, friendliness, and quality of food & drink. I heard that they had a few poor periods a some years ago under other management, but all sorted now and doing very well at improving in all areas. Child friendly too with a nice garden in the Spring/Summer. Definitely worth a visit and say 'Hi' to Landlord Les when you're there! WiFi available too.

Came across this lovely-looking pub on a trip to Maldon from home in E Herts and deliberately came back the same way to stop here for lunch. Cold, wet and manky December day. Pub - bars and restaurant area - were freezing. Central heating was apparent but either not on on broken. Wood burning stove in main bar area was smouldering away like a dung heap with too much damp wood on it, full of ash and with a broken door glass, meaning it wasn't able to draw properly. Staff, however, were very pleasant and efficient. Good options for beer & cider (didn't investigate wines). Food was very average and not really worth the money - £10 for a rather oily fish and chips with mushy peas and the same cost for a lasagne, salad & chips. The latter may have been home made but it was very cheaply done and not very exciting. Salad looked a bit ancient and again, rather boring. Chips were the best bit of both meals. Toilets were clean but also bloody freezing. Won't be back I'm afraid. Given the situation in England at the moment with pubs closing due to lack of trade I simply can not understand how a landlord/lady can allow this situation to happen. I fully expect that the next time I pass this quintessentially English pub it will either be in new hands or boarded up like so many others. No wifi.

I have eaten three times at the butchers arms and must say that from the moment you enter the pub the atmosphere and decor is very welcoming . The food is allways excellant and very well presented and we have had no reason for complaint , including thier scrummy sunday lunches . All in all a great pub to eat at and very friendly.

Both my Girlfriend and I chose the special, which was the Roast Chicken "with all the trimmings". It was awful. Cooked via microwave, my clump of mash you could pick it up with the fork like sticking it in a whole potato. The roast potatoes were dry and tasted like they had been cooked the day before. As for chicken it resembled pork more than chicken. We were both ill that night and the next day.
